For really close up photography the lens on an SLR can be moved further away from the body of the camera. This magnifies the image considerably and provides a much closer focus point. An extension tube fits between the camera body and lens. However, your autofocus function will no longer operate and this, and the exposure, will need to be set manually. It is possible to obtain extension tubes that do work with the autofocus and metering systems but these generally cost nearly three times the price.
