‘The webcam is dead...long live The Imaging Source!' - Astronomy Now review, May 2008. Discover the world of affordable CCD astrophotography. You too will soon be taking high quality astroimages!

The Imaging Source CCD Cameras - USB 2.0 or Firewire, Colour or Monochrome, with or without IR filters.

The Imaging Source cameras are very compact and extremely user-friendly. They come with chip sizes of ¼", 1/3" or ½" with image resolution from 640 x 480 pixels up to 1280 x 960 pixels.

They can give up to 60 frames per second or be used for exposures of up to 60 minutes, making them extremely versatile imaging tools.

They are ideal for lunar and planetary imaging, with a capacity for multiple rapid short exposures to offset the effects of atmospheric turbulence (in conjunction with stacking software).

They are also eminently suitable for many deep-sky objects including globular cluster, planetary nebulae etc using longer exposure times on shorter focal length scopes.

Download your images using either a USB 2.0 or by fast Firewire connection. (Please note - Mac users can easily take full advantage of the connectivity of Imaging Source cameras, but are more limited in dedicated imaging software. Using a Firewire camera on a PC or laptop will also require a powered FireWire cable to provide sufficient power to the camera. Contact Simon if you are thinking of going down this route)

All currently available models are listed below summarising their specifications. Call for advice if necessary. Nomenclature for Imaging Source cameras is not always obvious...

Remember - if your long-term goal is to take high-quality colour images, give serious consideration to getting a monochrome camera. This may sound counter-intuitive, however these will be more sensitive than the colour versions and will be far more versatile in the future. Addition of a LRGB filter set (with Luminance, Red, Green and Blue filters) or emission-line filters (eg Hydrogen-alpha, Sulphur-II, O-III) will allow full colour images to be constructed from separate exposures, cutting out a lot of the background skyglow (and even Moonlight) in the process.
