In 1838, Sir Charles Wheatstone invented the "stereoscopy" an instrument which allowed to see drawings from two different angles, giving the impression of tridemensionality. Development of photography transform the stereoscope from a simple scientific curiosity into one of the most popular "toys" of the bourgeoisie after 1850. This model is a reproduction of the one created by Oliver Wendell Holmes in 1862.

This is a plastic lorgnette type viewer for viewing over/under stereo pairs. This works well for panoramic pairs which are too wide to be viewed in side-by side format.  Most people use this for viewing printed pairs.

This lorgnette has the popular flip up brow feature and can be used to view pairs up to 4" wide (8" total, any height). The viewer is made for viewing Holmes cards (the most popular format of stereo prints) and can be used for smaller cards.  It is prismatic, made of a high quality plastic.
